Historical / Fiction - Regency England
The Earl of Raynhurst designs a diamond bracelet engraved with his initial and a sequential number to give to each of the women he had seduced. He runs into trouble when he meets a peasant girl during the war in Spain and is forced to marry her after she becomes "Number 20" in the diamond series.
After the war, he tries to locate her to file
for divorce from this unsuitable connection. Much to his surprise,
he discovers she is not a peasant but the granddaughter of an English duke
and he now has a son . . . the heir to the Raynhurst fortune. The
present heir, a cousin, is not willing to be replaced and plots to have
the boy murdered.
