Henry Carey (1687 - 1743) died at the age of 56 by hanging himself in his home.  He was the author of poems,  plays, operas and songs . . .  this song was written in 1715.

Note: -- During that era, in England, it was common practice for a young man to apprentice himself to a tradesman for a period of seven years.  Thus the reference to the seven years in the song.
