Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) achieved fame in the 19th Century as a poet and writer of historical romance novels.

This poem, Lochinvar, is part of Scott's Marmion (Canto V) as a ballad sung by Lady Heron.  It has since obtained popularity on its own merits and has been published separately in poetry books.
