TO THOMAS MOORE
By
Lord Byron
Over the years, Byron wrote long and humorous letters to his friend,
Tom Moore. While in Italy, Byron entrusted Moore with his autobiography
to be publish after his death. Unfortunately, others were worried
about what Byron may have written that would be embarrassing or scandalous
to the living and convinced Moore to burn it. Later, Moore did publish
a book about Byron.
This poem was contained in a letter to Moore and below it, Byron
wrote:
"This should have been written fifteen moons ago ---
the first stanza was. I am just come out from an hour's swim in the
Adriatic; and I write to you with a black-eyed Venetian girl before me,
reading Boccaccio. . ."
