Adelaide Anne Procter  ( 1825 - 1864 ) wrote under the pen-name, Mary Berwick.  She was the daughter of playwright, poet and song writer, Bryan Waller Procter.

This poem relates to  the question many women would have on their mind before entering the life-long commitment of marriage . . . and in that century, it was nearly impossible to obtain a divorce.
